An extensive extended cruise circling the Australian Coast was terminated in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the cruise liner on a remote coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on the tropical location with other travelers from the vessel, but broke off from the excursion for a break. The liner departed without her and went back after some time after the ship staff realised the passenger was not present.

A large-scale hunt located her body the subsequent day.

Authorities are looking into the event, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator announced that travelers and crew on the ship were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and earlier mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he added that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to arrange the return journeys of the travelers via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also published an latest communication, and said they had "provided a notice to the Master" preventing any additional guests from boarding the vessel.

The official said that they would visit the vessel in Cairns upon its return.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or not long after, mother died, by herself."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the company was "collaborating extensively with investigators to assist their inquiry".

He said that the organization was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had offered its full support to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel caters for up to 120 guests with 46 crew, according to corporate data. It was specially constructed to access remote areas of the nation's coastline and is equipped with "tenders" - minor craft used to ferry travelers on land visits.

Events such as this are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to document which travelers are boarding or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard just isn't an option," an authority stated.

Vessel operators take these methods very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such events from occurring," the expert added.

"This seems to be probably a shocking - and tragic - isolated incident."
