Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
