A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
