Are You Able to Solve This? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Shaped our Contemporary World
One can find numerous contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, though, that honor should go to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical saw, that converted timber to planks with virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic dominance across the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component transformed the circular movement into up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead one precise increment each stroke.
“Each element was simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine these parts so the machine acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending stroke and moving on every upward stroke. It was a remarkably clever application of basic components.”
A fact that leads us to today’s puzzle. The task is for you to reinvent a key the basic concepts underpinning this historic machine.
Round and Up
Construct a machine that turns rotary motion to vertical action. Your available these items exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two bars. A “sleeve”, that is a cylinder or housing into which one of the rods will fit snugly. (Assume you can put things on a stand, so that the components don’t collapse.)
The solution returns at 5pm UK time featuring the solution.
In the interim, NO SPOILERS. Rather, please propose (less celebrated) candidates as the planet’s most impactful creation.
